First Baptist Church young people, grades third through fifth, will be leaving for Cross Timbers Church camp this Friday and return on Monday. I will be attending camp this year as a sponsor and look forward to experiencing camp with August as well as the other kiddos because I teach their Sunday School class. It is a big responsibility to be in charge of parents’ most special gifts, their children. Please keep all sponsors and children in your prayers as we head to camp.

Thank you again to everyone who has donated for the concrete foundation of the pavilion. It will be placed at the cemetery for graveside services. All monies raised will go towards the foundation, an enclosed case to place a map of the cemetery and a box for an alphabetical list of all grave locations. Thank you to Wynn Bland Davis for contacting her class, Class of 1963, informing them of this project and asking them to take part. We have heard from several classmates and it’s fun to reminisce about each of them as we see their names on the envelopes we receive. Also, you may or may not have noticed but the entryways to our cemetery have flowerpots sitting atop the columns. I don’t remember ever seeing plants in those pots until a few years ago. Around Memorial Day, Nellie Faye Cooper told her friends they needed to purchase ferns for the pots to decorate for Memorial Day. They did exactly that and it made such a difference in the welcoming ambience it added to the cemetery. They were real ferns and there was no way to water them regularly, so they removed them after Memorial Day. This year these women are at it again and have purchased ultra-violet resistant artificial ferns to grace the entrance to our cemetery and they will remain there permanently. Women donating to this effort are Nellie Faye Cooper, Aleta Smalley, Lavina Hinman, Pat Poskey, Vivian Henshaw, Jo Braden, and Jean Pearman. These ladies support all of Town Talk’s projects and anything that has to do with the betterment of Stroud. It takes all of us working together. You can look around our community and see that with all the improvements taking place, there are many volunteers behind the scenes who go unnoticed. Town Talk sends a big thank you to these ladies and everyone working on our cemetery projects.

Town Talk wants to give a shout out to our friend Lyndon Patton. He has helped Town Talk with many projects, and we appreciate him very much. He has been a little “under the weather” but tells us he is on the mend. If you see him outside when you drive down Main Street, give him a honk and a wave so he knows we are all thinking about him.

As we all know, it’s a small world. My granddaughter from Stillwater dates a young man from Bristow. I recently found out he is a brother-in-law to one of our Stroud teachers, Jeff Britt. I had the privilege of meeting Jeff and his wife Brynlee this past week. Jeff teaches elementary physical education and coaches high school football and track in Stroud. Brynlee is a social worker in the Tulsa area, and they reside in Bristow with their eighteen-month-old twin daughters, Baker and Scottie. It’s a family affair because both Jake’s mother and brother teach at Parkview Elementary, also. Today we are a mobile society so not all our teachers live locally, and we don’t always have a chance to get to know them. It was nice to get to spend some time with them and be able to convey to you that Stroud is employing some great teachers and coaches. Speaking of hiring coaches, congratulations to Stroud’s own Bobby Riley for being hired as Stroud Middle School’s head football and baseball coach. Kreg Hilbert posted on Facebook, “Not many 2A schools have a former NFL athlete as one of their coaches but Stroud does.” Not only that but Bobby Riley is homegrown, one of our own alumni. It’s another great day to be a Tiger!

You may find this hard to believe but there was no baseball in my family this past week. All the boys had the week off and spent it celebrating the Fourth of July. Thank you to the City of Stroud and the Stroud Fire Department for another great fireworks show. They never disappoint!

Town Talk appreciates your shopping local first but if you want a donut you’re going to have to look somewhere other than GiGi’s for the next three weeks. The donut shop is closed for vacation. Have a great week and remember to shop local………………..first!
