Town Talk

We will commemorate Memorial Day on Monday, May 31st.

The American Legion Auxiliary will be putting flags at the cemetery on veterans’ graves Thursday, May 27th beginning at 9:00 a.m.

A special thank you to Ken and Celeste Carpenter and Carpenter Insurance for providing the flags each year.

There are over 700 veterans buried at our cemetery and Ken told me it was their honor to sponsor the flags. Each year we must replace torn and tattered flags and this year Carpenter’s will purchasing about 300 new flags. The Auxiliary would not be able to afford replacing the flags each year, so the organization is appreciative of the Carpenters’ commitment. Ken and Celeste also help put the flags out and bring employees from their insurance agency, too.

Ken stated, “It’s time to let folks know about this privilege and ask the citizens of Stroud to come out and join us.”

Many parents and grandparents bring their children and grandchildren to teach about honoring and respecting our veterans. The Memorial Day service, including a 21-gun salute by members of Stroud American Legion Post #257, will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Memorial Day at the Stroud Cemetery.

The American Legion was open last Saturday, and free haircuts were available to all community members.

American Legion Commander Michael Horwath’s wife, Chong Horwath, is a licensed barber who has many years of experience in the profession.

Chong is in the process of opening her own shop here in Stroud but until it opens, she is volunteering her services.

The Legion does accept donations, but it is not required. Watch the Stroud Happenings and Functions Facebook page to see when this will be available again.

Town Talk was hoping to have the mini-golf course open by Memorial Day/Alumni weekend, but Mother Nature has not cooperated.

There has been too much rain in the last month to get the ground leveled. We thought we might be able to skip this step but after the holes arrived, we took another look at the property and decided it did need to be leveled.

We wanted to be able to share the opening day with all the alums who will be in town later this month but it’s just not going to work out. We want to be sure we do things right, so we do not want to rush the process.

For those of you picking up a paper on Wednesday this week our first Main

Street clean up night is scheduled for this evening at 6:00 p.m. Bring your yard tools and come join us as we work together to help get Main Street in tip-top shape. We want to put our best foot forward for our alums as they come back to visit.

Greg Murfin at the tag agency told my mom he’s seeing quite a few alums coming to Stroud to renew their driver’s licenses. They tell him the lines are too long in Tulsa and OKC, so they just come back to their hometown for those conveniences. Just another advantage to living in small town America. Andrea Thompson of Unique OK is promoting the new mantra, “Choose local first.”

I think that’s a positive way to look at shopping locally – check out your local merchants first and then if you don’t find what you’re looking for venture outside of Stroud. Shopping locally is not a mandate but a choice.

Our merchants hope you choose Stroud! Have a great week.
