Help with stop signs

Body

The Lincoln County Commissioners are asking for help from the public. Please report anyone stealing, defacing, or pushing over stop signs.

While the expense of replacing them is about $44 plus labor, it can’t begin to compare with a life or lives lost because a stop sign was missing. In a split second, this senseless act of stealing a sign could easily cause a child to be without a parent. A young person could have a promising career in athletics ended, be brain damaged, or killed. For what? Because someone wanted to decorate a room with a stop sign or just push it down for fun!

Safety is our primary concern. However, according to Oklahoma State Statutes Title 21-1753.8 punishment could mean a $100 fine or up to 30 days in jail. If someone is injured or dies, punishment becomes a felony and upon conviction, could result in $1000 fine and two years with the Department of Corrections.

Let’s all help with this responsibility; after all it could be you, your child or grandchild in that deadly wreck. It is your taxpayers’ dollars that have to replace those signs, and it is your life and mine that depends on those signs.

Please forward any information on defacing, stealing, selling, or destroying signs to any of the County Commissioners, District #1 Commissioner, Carl Munson (918) 968-2223; District #2, Troy Evans (405) 258-1444; District #3, Lee Doolen (405) 279-3313 or Sheriff Charlie Dougherty at (405) 258-1191.

Troy Evans, Lincoln County commissioner
