Davenport football falls to Cherokee

Davenport dropped its district opener to Cherokee 46-0 in a home contest last week and like a lot of schools faces a quick turn around this week.

The Bulldogs will travel to Olive tonight (Thursday) for a road contest.

Coach John Greenfield said kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs are 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in district.

Greenfield said of last week’s loss, “Cherokee was a little bit better than we thought they were.”

He noted, “We didn’t start out well, we started slow. We played better in the second quarter, then lost the momentum.”

The coach thought the defense played pretty well the second quarter, but offensively the Bulldogs couldn’t sustain momentum.

“We were down 16-0 at the end of the first period and then they scored just before halftime to go up 32-0.

“We’d get something going offensively, then have a fumble, a penalty or make a mistake.

“We’d shoot ourselves in the foot every time we turned around,” he stated.

Of Olive, he says, “I think they’ve won a game or two.”

Running back Brody Robinson carried the ball 17 times and gained 81 yards on the ground and also caught two passes for 16 yards.

Robinson had five solo tackles and six assists for a total of 11.

Freshman quarterback Chase Mitchell completed nine of 17 passes for 65 yards and managed 12 yards on four carries.

Reece Murfin caught three passes for 41 yards.

Aydan Stancell had six solo tackles along with seven assists for a total of 13.

Ivan Morris caused a fumble and Tyler Gilkison picked off a pass.
