Davenport’s Bulldogs 45ed Gans Friday night, notching their fifth shutout in seven games and getting their first district win.
The Dawgs and Week 10 opponent Wetumka are atop District B-II-4 with 1-0 records.
Davenport is off this week before returning Oct. 23 to host Keota.
Dawgs head coach Grant Powell said Davenport was expecting Gans to play a ballcontrol game, and that’s exactly what happened.
“They tried to run the ball and run the clock down and keep it out of our hands,” he said. “But we did a pretty good job not getting too stressed out and anxious about going to score.”
The Dawgs needed to run only 19 offensive plays to get the win. They racked up 217 yards and five touchdowns.
They allowed the Grizzlies 87 yards of total offense on 33 plays.
Davenport has an open date this week due to schedule change when Arkoma dropped out of the district. Powell said it comes at a good time, especially since quarterback Chase Mitchell will be out with an injury “We’re going to heal up,” he said. “Our quarterback broke his fibula. He made a touchdown run into the end zone and got hit on the ankle.”
“So we’re going to heal up and figure out who we’re going to put back there at quarterback and keep going on with our season.
“The good thing is that we have three or four guys who have taken a snap at quarterback, so we have to figure out which one best fits our system and can pick right up where Mitchell left off.”
Aydan Stancell stepped in as quarterback after Mitchell was hurt late in the first quarter.
“He plays tailback and receiver and came in and played quarterback when Mitchell got hurt and did a great job,” Powell said.
“He understands the offense, and we signal everything in and do a no-huddle offense. He knows all the signals and did a great job getting everyone lined up.”
Before his injury, Mitchell completed four of five passes for 29 yards and ran once for 13 yards and a touchdown.
Brody Robinson ran seven times for 94 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned a pass interception 50 yards for a touchdown.
Stancell ran five times for 67 yards and two touchdowns and caught one ball for eight yards.
Reece Murfin caught a pass for 12 yards and ran once for 4 yards.
Carter Marshall caught one pass for 13 yards
