The McLoud Redskins have opened the 2020 football season with a resounding 38-6 victory over Class 6A U.S. Grant High School.

McLoud veteran head Coach Rusty Hall said. “It’s good to start out with a good win. It helps morale always to get that first win.”

It was the first victory for the Redskins since the 2018 season, as they went winless a year ago.

Next up the Redskins host Bethel Friday night which won over Meeker, 28-8, last week. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Redskin field.

Hall said it will be senior night. The Redskins built a 30-0 first half lead and cruised from there. “Our defense played lights out and so did our offense,” Hall said.

McLoud’s quarterback is a move-in from Little Axe. Hall said senior Collin Gibson, 6-2 and 185 pounds, hit 7-14 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball 14 times for 154 yards and 2 TD’s, the coach noted.

“We had about 417 yards of offense, 299 rushing and 108 passing. Moving the ball, we averaged about 10 yards a play,” Hall added.

Defensively, McLoud held the Generals to about 100 yards total offense. “We had eight or nine pass breakups and five sacks. We should have 10 or 11 sacks,” Hall believes. “We were in their backfield all night, just couldn’t always wrap them up.

Sophomore tailback Clint Campbell, 6-0 and 185 pounds, accounted for 127 yards on the ground carrying the pigskin 14 times. He also caught three passes for 70 yards including one TD.

Hall praised his special teams. “Our kickoff team played lights out, too, pinning them deep a bunch of times. Our punt return team got a safety and our punt team also got a safety. Our special teams were flying around and making plays,” he said.

Looking to Friday night’s opponent Bethel, Hall said the Wildcats are well-coached. “They have some pretty good size up front, but we do, too. They have a big running back and two good wide receivers.”

Hall thinks one of the keys will be getting to their quarterback who is new this year. “We have to have good pressure off the edge. Our secondary has to execute their assignments all the time.”

He said their quarterback is,“Very athletic, moves around and scrambles pretty well.”
