New faces will be found on the sidelines of the court and mat this upcoming season.
During the monthly Chandler school board meeting, board members hired Joseph Shawn Blankenship as the head coach for the boys basketball team and John Childress as the head coach for the wrestling team.
Chandler Public Schools Athletic Director Goeff Metheny said both coaches not only have a lot of experience, but also a proven track record of success.
“I’m excited to have them as part of our coaching staff,” he said.
Shawn Blankenship graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelors degree in Accounting. He is alternatively certified to teach math and science.
At Chandler High School, Blankenship will be teaching social studies.
Before coming to Chandler, Blankenship was the head coach at Strother for three years; before that he was the head coach at Bethel.
Blankenship said he hasn’t coached against the Chandler Lions since his time at Bethel, but he’s heard of their talent.
“I’m excited,” he said.
Blankenship said he’s excited to get started and meet the team.
Childress graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a bachelors degree in social studies.
He a few of the classes he will be teaching include Oklahoma History and Geography.
Since 2012, Childress has been teaching and coaching at Capitol Hill in Oklahoma City.
“I’m very excited that I have the opportunity to change lives in a different atmosphere,” he said.
Childress said this is a brand new chapter in his life and he is looking forward to the growth he can bring to the Chandler wrestling program. Other actions made by board members include:
