Anticipating Father’s Day

I look forward to Father’s Day that is coming up this Sunday, June 21. Last year I was a little more excited than in some prior years. It’s an honor to be the father of such a sweet, amazing, young woman, as our daughter Meghan is.

Letter to the editor

I’ve gone back and forth on saying anything concerning what’s going on in our country and after being deleted by some of my black and bi-racial friends for being one of those “white silence is violence” white friends I’ve decided to address it, just this once, where I stand.

Taking a chance on a haircut

Salt and pepper strands drifted to the bathroom floor as I finished up my dad’s haircut. I’d never imagined that quarantine would lead me to cutting my dad’s hair with no more training than the couple of online tutorials I’d consumed that same afternoon.

Hearing the diagnosis

“Boys, sit down I want to talk to you.” My mom was about to tell us something that would turn our lives upside down. “I found out today that I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called carcinoid. It’s what the doctor calls stage four… which means it’s pretty dangerous to have.

Back ache

A couple of Saturdays ago, I woke up ready to get cracking on a long to-do list. Cleaning out the garage, going to the dump, fixing the mower, mowing, digging a spot for some flowers. So I swung my legs over the side of the bed and - woah!

Finding my place in a hot car

Heat blasted my face through the open window, whipping tangles into my ponytail and vaporizing the sweat on my forehead. Digital numbers showed dark against the bright green car dash display: 97 degrees. Welcome to June in Oklahoma.

A good weekend with friends

A couple of weeks ago my wife Pat and I and little pooch Bailey journeyed down to our place at Lake Eufaula. It was the first time for us to go there for a weekend since late last October.
