Six-year sentence in starvation case

The dad of a Meeker youth who was convicted in June by a jury of child neglect, has been sentenced to serve six years in state prison.

Jimmy Lee Jones, Sr., 37, of Meeker, was convicted of nearly starving to death his son almost three years ago.

Recently, District Judge Cindy Ashwood adopted the jury’s verdict and handed down the sentence. She advised Jones it was an 85 percent crime and also of his right to appeal.

Court records show he has filed an appeal even though he is now in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

He is to report to the Court Clerk’s cost administrator within 180 days of his release from prison.

Jones was originally charged more than three years ago, on July 23, 2018, with two felonies in the case, child abuse by injury and child neglect.

Those charges were filed by former District Attorney Richard Smothermon. Later, after current DA Allan Grubb was in office, the child abuse by injury charge was dismissed.

Also charged at that time in addition to Jones was Amy Adkins Jones, then 46, identified as the teen’s stepmom, who was originally charged with felonies of enabling child abuse by injury and child neglect.

Jonathan Luke Plank, at that time 20, and Tyler Joe Adkins at the time 24, the two brothers, each faced a single felony charge of child neglect. All of the four reportedly resided at 101529 S. 3470 Road, Meeker.

Later, the case against Plank was dismissed.

The step-mom and Tyler Joe Adkins still face a single count of child neglect.

Amy Adkins Jones is scheduled for jury trial at 9 a.m. on Oct. 18 and set for the jury trial call docket at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 15. Her motion for a continuance was recently denied by the judge.

Adkins was also scheduled to go to jury trial on the same date. However, in September, the judge continued his case to the next felony disposition docket at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2022 and a jury trial at 9 a..m. on Feb. 7, 2022.
