Diabetes prevention program offered in Lincoln County

Jessica Riggin of Lincoln County is one of 12 Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Family and Consumer Sciences educators who have been trained as Life Coaches for the Centers for Disease Control’s Diabetes Prevention Program. Riggin is offering a yearlong class to help county residents reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The 2022 class, which will be held virtually, starts Jan. 20.

Community members 18 years of age or older who have been diagnosed with prediabetes or previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes are eligible to participate. Classes will meet 16 times within the first six months, then once a month for the remaining six months. In Lincoln County, the onehour classes will take place Thursdays at 12 p.m. via Zoom video conferencing website.

Riggin said the first emphasis in the class will focus on small weight losses. She said that this is a lifestyle change program that includes group support from others who share like goals and struggles.
