School is now in full swing. We had great weather Friday night for the Blue and White Pep Rally.
There was a good turnout, and it was nice to see all the kiddos who are participating in school activities.
Extra-curricular activities are an important part of a student’s education. Research shows that those activities promote social kills, improve academic performance, provide stress relief and broaden horizons.
What’s not to like about that? Let’s get out and support our various school activities. Our first opportunity will be this Friday night when our high school football team competes in its first scrimmage at Mannford. Good luck to Coach Presley, his assistant coaches, and the Stroud Tiger football players.
It’s nice to welcome Bobby Riley back to Stroud as an assistant coach. He is a Stroud alum and was an outstanding football player himself.
Other activities this week include the Route 66 Metal Detecting Club meeting at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall this Thursday, August 18th.
FBC Kids will kick off this Wednesday (for those of you picking up your paper locally) August 17th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The food pantry will be open from 9:00 a.m. until noon on Tuesday, August 23rd.
Longtime Stroud resident and Stroud alum Greg Argrow died on August 3rd and a Memorial Service was recently held for him.
I was unable to attend, but mother did and even though it was under sad circumstances, she enjoyed getting to visit with two of Greg’s brothers and her former students, Brian and John Argrow. Both currently reside in Colorado.
John asked her how Gary and I were doing, and she had to share with him that Gary, too, had died. Brian stated that Gary was his best friend when they were in school, and I remember that the two did have a special friendship.
Dennis Crittenden, another Stroud alum, died on August 8th. He was a Stroud resident and graduated with the Class of 1981.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Glover Crittenden. Glover was Stroud’s Chief of Police for many years. Clarice Crittenden, his mom, still resides here in Stroud.
We also lost another long-time resident, Stroud’s beloved Jim Bierd, this past Saturday. Jim was married to the former Vera Teeters Quinn. Town Talk offers condolences to each of these families.
I visited this week with my friend, Mary Linda Meredith Pryor who resides in Alaska. She and I are working on getting a veteran’s banner on Main Street for two of her classmates.
Since I know Mary Linda continues to subscribe to our local paper, I must give her a shout out.
Nice to know that even though she’s miles away, she hasn’t forgotten about her hometown. Anyone interested in a veteran’s banner please call me at 918-527-9833. We are still taking orders and the banners will be until after Veteran’s Day for this year.
Highway 66 West is looking good, so be sure to check it out when you’re headed that way.
The railroad company is clearing out trees, weeds and debris and is giving it a much cleaner, cared-for look.
I know many people have stated they wished the railroad would do something about that area. The unkempt area started at the west end of Main Street and has looked unsightly for some time. The City has worked on it but local citizens have always voiced that the railroad needed to clean it up. I guess someone listened because work has begun and it’s going to be nice.
I want to apologize for misspelling two names last week, April Haines and the late Deana Wright. I left an “i” out of Haines and put an extra “n” in Deana. Mom and I read and reread Town Talk and proof and reproof it before I send it to be published but often still miss an error.
I don’t like any mistakes, but grammatical errors and name misspellings are two that really bother me. I wanted to note the corrections I should have caught last week.
Putt Putt Kicks on Route 66 is still open 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. If you would like us to open at a special time to accommodate your group, just give me at call at 918-527-9833. It’s not too late to purchase your Tiger gear. Several of our local merchants are carrying Tiger merchandise in their stores. Not only will you be being supporting a local retail business you will be supporting our local wholesale merchandising business because most of our fan gear is made locally at Macco. Have a great week and thank you for choosing to shop and dine local…………………first!
