Meeker hires new principal

The Meeker Board of Education this week hired a new elementary principal, administered the Oath of Office to a new board member and employed two elementary school teachers.

Board members also realigned themselves, with longtime board member Lindel Standlee becoming president, Bret Wood vice president and Josh Elliott clerk.

Stacie Miller was seated as the new Office No. 3 board member. She was elected without opposition at the end of the filing period last December.

She replaces Ashley Sellers who is stepping down after serving 10 years on the board.

Following a brief executive session, board members returned to open meeting and hired Sarah Flowers as elementary principal for the 20232024 school year. They also employed Roseanna Sorrels and Jessica Akins as elementary teachers for the 2023-2024 school year.

Flowers said she has been with the Tecumseh School District 12 years, serving as Middle School Principal the last six.

Board members also approved resignation requests from Dalaina Self, elementary teacher, Breanna Sebourn, paraprofessional, Amy Stone, elementary school librarian and Bailey Vaughn, who is retiring as band instructor.

In other business, board members approved a contract with Oklahoma School Pictures for the 2023-2024 school year.

They also agreed to renew the Department of Rehabilitation Services Transition School to Work contract for the 20232024 school year and updated policies regarding corporal punishment and restraints and seclusion.

In their reports, High School Principal Brad Buxton reported lots of activities are going on and enrollment totals 209.

Middle School Principal Rodney Treat advised the board several activities are wrapping up and Middle School enrollment stands at 168.

John Bolander, who along with Buxton is sharing elementary principal duties, reported enrollment is 330 students.

Ginger Pritchard, Meeker Education Center and Alternative Education principal, advised there are 92 students overall in grades K-12 who are taking advantage of the virtual and blended learning opportunities, up two from last month’s report.

Pritchard told board members there will be a summer recovery program starting the day after school ends until June 30.

School Supt. Jeff Pruitt advised the board that high school graduation will be May 12 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at OBU’s Raley Chapel.
