February trial in child abuse

A woman who was employed as a full time inhome nurse and charged with child abuse following her arrest by Lincoln County deputies is scheduled to stand trial in February.

Candice Elizabeth Bootenhoff, 39, of Luther was formally charged Oct. 31, 2022 in Lincoln County District Court with felony child abuse.

At the conclusion of her preliminary hearing, she was bound over to stand trial.

During her arraignment before District Judge Traci Soderstrom on Sep. 19, Bootenhoff pleaded not guilty. The judge set her jury trial for Feb. 5, 2024. She is set for the felony disposition docket on Jan. 16 and jury trial call docket on Jan. 23.

Her bond was set at $25,000 and she made her initial appearance on Dec. 1.

Bootenhoff is accused on Oct. 24, 2022 at a residence in Wellston in Lincoln County of maliciously harming or threatening to harm a 17-year-old child when the defendant accepted responsibility for the care and supervision of the child by slapping the child’s hands and by carrying the child by her arms and legs.

In a probable cause affidavit, Lincoln County Investigator Christopher Hyde stated he was notified by Deputy Jimmy Brown around 4 p.m. on Oct. 25 that he had been dispatched to a child abuse complaint. The affidavit states the reporting party was located at her residence in Wellston.

Hyde reported that Brown arrived a short time before he did and began gathering information from the woman who was the reporting party.

As Hyde proceeded with the probe into the child abuse complaint, he states that on Oct. 27 Investigators Larry Stover and Tanner Hand joined the investigation.

Hyde later that day advised Bootenhoff she was being placed under arrest and Deputy Ty Wiseman escorted her to the Lincoln County Jail in Chandler where she was booked in on the charge of child abuse.
