150 years in prison

A Wellston man has been sentenced to 150 years in state prison for crimes against minors.

Jason Wayne Womack, 41, was convicted by a Lincoln County jury in October and the jury recommended he spend 150 years in state prison.

Appearing before District Judge John Canavan on Tuesday for sentencing, the judge followed the jury’s recommendation and ordered Womack to serve six 25-year prison terms, with the terms to run consecutively for a total of 150 years in prison.

Assistant District Attorney Kelly Trimble, who along with Assistant DA Rachel Thompson, prosecuted the case, said following the sentencing, “Today, Judge Canavan followed the recommendation of the jury and imposed the exact sentence that we were hoping for–one that ensures he will never be able to victimize and traumatize young girls ever again.”

Womack was originally charged in September of 2021 in Lincoln County District Court with six counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 which were amended on Oct. 23, 2023.

Two other charges of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 were filed on March 23, 2023.

The jury spent just under three hours in deliberations before returning its verdict. Of the six original counts he was charged with which were amended he was convicted on four of those six and also the two that were filed in March of this year.

In all, he was convicted of violating three young girls, the oldest of whom was nine years old.

Judge Canavan, who presided over the trial, ordered a pre-sentence investigation. Victims’ impact statements were read prior to the judge handing out the sentence.

Womack’s defense attorneys were Shelley Levisay and William Pierce.

Womack was convicted of Count 1 of the amended information filed by the District Attorney’s Office of committing lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 between Dec. 1, 2020 and Aug. 18, 2021 at a residence in Wellston. The victim, a girl, was nine years old at the time.

He was convicted of Count 2 of the amended information of committing lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 between Dec. 1, 2020 and Aug. 18, 2021 at a residence in Wellston. The victim was the same nine-year-old he was convicted of perpetrating the crime on in Count 1.

Womack was convicted of Count 4 of the amended information of lewd or indecent acts to a child during the same time period by requiring the nine-yearold to touch his penis.

In Count 6 of the amended information he was convicted of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 in the same time period as the others. The victim in Count 6 was a seven-year-old girl.

Womack was convicted of both Counts 1 and 2 of the charges filed on March 23, 2023. Both counts were lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 and were committed between Oct. 22, 2019 and Oct. 22, 2021 in Lincoln County.

The victim in both counts was a girl between the ages of five and seven at the time.
