Alpha Iota Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met Thursday, April 18, in the Chandler High School Media Center Library. The April meeting was a time of recognition and celebration. Each year, DKG sponsors an essay contest for 7th and 8th grade students, and the Alpha Iota Chapter recognizes the top two individuals locally and in turn forwards the 1st place winners to the state competition. Our local winners were: 7th grade—1st place-Julia Gardner, 2nd place-Madison Herring. 8th grade—1st place-Karyss Campbell, 2nd place-Lizzy Pryor.
Karyss Campbell will be recognized at the Oklahoma Delta Kappa Gamma Convention in June for 1st place winner overall. The topic of their essay this year was: “What career or vocation do you see yourself having when you are an adult? Explain why you chose it and how you would prepare for it. Pam Anderson is always helpful with this essay contest in her English classes. We also awarded two Recruitment Grants to an education major that has two semesters of college remaining. These grants went to Morgan Fowble and Kaylin Wright. Twenty-seven guests attended to recognize these students. In addition to honoring these students, we also celebrated the birthday of Delta Kappa Gamma and included birthday cake on the reception table.
Fourteen Alpha Iota members were in attendance. President, Marilyn Young, presided over the business meeting. Linda Newby gave the treasurer’s report. State Convention is June 7-8. A group will be in the talent show on Friday night. New officers for the next biennium were elected: President: Rachel Karger, 1st Vice President: Kim Leatherwood, 2nd Vice President- Adrianne DeKlotz, Recording Secretary-Cynthia Snider, Treasurer & Parliamentarian— Marilyn Young. Marilyn conducted a remembrance ceremony for Gwen Jones, a former Alpha Iota member.
