A Blue Star Memorial Marker will be dedicated on June 14 in Stroud. The event will take place at 10 a.m. at Ed Smalley Centennial Park.
The memorial marker was donated by the Cushing Gladious Garden Club in cooperation with Will Rogers Parliamentarian Unit NAP and the Dallas Flower Show Founders Group.
According to the National Garden Clubs, Inc, the Blue Star Program honors all men and women who serve in the United States Armed Services. It began in 1944 with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs as a living memorial for WWII veterans.
The Blue Star was adopted because it became an icon in WWII and was seen on flags and banners in homes for those who were away at war.
Ed Smalley Centennial Park is located at 114 West Main in Stroud, Oklahoma.
