Town Talk

After a summer hiatus, Town Talk is back. Thanks to all of you who told me you missed reading it. A big shout out to two of my readers in Wellston, Tom and Terry Mullendore, who called just to see if I was alive. They were concerned because they had not seen my column in the paper for a few months. Thanks to them for checking on me.

The American Legion kicked off its 2024-2025 year with its monthly meeting held on September 4th with the swearing in of new officers. Those include Diana McGuire, president, Pam Hunt, vice-president, Diana Reed, secretary, Julie Bivin, treasurer, Jo Braden, sergeant-at-arms, Delores Hamlin, correspondence secretary and Aleta Smalley, chaplain. The unit’s first undertaking will be a November event to honor our veterans. I’ll provide more information in this column at a later date.

Activities for the week include Stroud Community Clothing Ministry, every Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. West Highway 66, Route 66 Metal Detecting Club, Thursday September 19th 7:00 p.m. Stroud City Hall, Route 66 Balloon Festival, Friday - Sunday September 20th – 22nd Arcadia, and Stroud Fall City-Wide Garage Sale, Friday – Sunday September 20th – 22nd.

Congratulations to Stroud High School football coach Josh Presley and his team of coaches for leading our Tigers to two victories, defeating both Chandler and Pawnee. The Tigers will travel to Tonkawa this Friday to take on the Buccaneers with kick-off set for 7:00 p.m. Leading the Tiger effort on the field will be senior quarterback Dylan Baker. His brother, junior Trystan Baker is the receiver for many of his brother’s passes. They are the sons of Chad and Kimberly Baker and grandsons of Ronnie and Dee Baker. Ronnie graduated from Stroud with the Class of 1967 and was quite an athlete himself. I can brag about him because he is my first cousin once removed. Let’s cheer the Tigers on for another victory.

Stroud Middle School Tigers have also started their season. The Tigers will face North Rock Creek here in Stroud on Monday September 23rd with kick-off set for 3:30 p.m. Leading the charge will be eighth grade quarterback, Gideon Smalley.

Coach Steven McCammon’s Little League baseball team is playing Fall ball in Seminole. This is most of the team’s first year playing kid-pitch, so this is a new experience for them.

If you want to see these boys play, their next game will be Friday, September 27th at 6:00 p.m. in Seminole at American Legion Sports Complex.

Town Talk Team Trivia will be held Wednesday, September 25th at 6:00 p.m. at the American Legion building. The cost is $20 for a single or $30 for a couple from the same household. This includes dinner and trivia. Come join in the fun.

Even though I took the summer off, I hope you didn’t take the summer off and continued to support our local merchants. They count on each of us to support their small business. Have a great week and thank you for continuing to shop local first.
