The Stroud Municipal Airport runway expansion remains scheduled for completion Sept. 26 after favorable weather early in construction gave way to rain delays.
Work began March 9, starting a 200-day construction period, City Manager Bob Pearman said. As of July 7, crews were on day 120.
Crews are completing final grading on the north and south runway extensions and continuing to dig trenches and install conduit for the new runway lighting system.
The roughly $7 million project will extend the runway from 3,000 feet to 4,000 feet, widen it to 75 feet and install new runway lighting. A new turnaround will be built at the end of the expanded runway. The existing runway also will be patched and covered with a new 2-inch layer of asphalt, and crews are installing a drainage system along its edges to reduce erosion.
Pearman said there have been no change orders, so the project’s cost remains unchanged. The runway and taxiway are expected to remain closed until Sept. 26.
The Stroud Industrial Authority is now considering proposals for partnerships to construct privately owned hangars at the airport.
