Carney man injured in wreck

A Carney man suffered injuries in a Payne County traffic collision when the dump truck he was driving was struck from behind, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

The two-vehicle collision occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 27 on SH 51 one-half mile east of Council Creek Road, approximately nine miles east of Stillwater in Payne County.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Steve Burrows identified the Carney man as Larry W. Kingston, 54. The trooper said Kingston was transported by Life Net to Hillcrest Hospital in Cushing with head and trunk internal injuries where he was treated and later released.

The trooper reported Kingston was driving a 2016 Mac dump truck eastbound on SH 51 when he slowed to make a right turn into a private drive and his truck was struck from the rear by a 2019 Ford-500 truck driven by Kevin Baggett, 41, of Glen Rose, Texas.

Baggett was taken by Life Net to Hillcrest Hospital in Cushing where he was listed in good condition with head and trunk internal injuries, the trooper said.

Burrows said both vehicles were traveling eastbound on SH 51 when the Ford truck struck Kingston’s dump truck, causing it to roll ¼ time, coming to rest on the driver’s side. Baggett’s truck traveled another 67 feet before leaving the roadway to the right.

The trooper said the condition of both drivers at the time of the collision was apparently normal.

Cause of the collision was listed as distracted driving.

Seat belts were equipped and in use by both drivers, the trooper reported and Baggett’s truck was equipped with an airbag and it deployed, he said.

Assisting Burrows who is with the Payne County Detachment of Troop K were the Stillwater Fire Department and the Payne County Sheriff’s office.
