Commissioners call jail election July 13

Lincoln County Commissioners this week adopted a resolution calling for a special election asking voters to approve general obligation tax bonds to construct a new county jail.

The special election will be held July 13 this year.

Following a short discussion, District 1 Commissioner Carl Munson made the motion to adopt the resolution and District 2 Commissioner Marlon Miller seconded it.

Joining them in approving it was District 3 Commissioner and Commission Chairman Lee Doolen.

Two weeks ago they adopted a resolution calling a special election hoping voters will approve the formation of an Emergency Medical Services District.

During Monday’s meeting this week, it was emphasized the jail issue and the formation of an Emergency Medical Services District, will be two separate ballot questions to be voted on at the same election.

The resolution adopted Monday on the jail issue stipulates the general obligation bonds will not exceed $13.5 million. They will be used to provide funds for acquiring real property, if necessary, and designing, constructing, equipping, furnishing and maintaining a new Lincoln County Jail to be completed with or without the use of other available funds.

Ad valorem taxes will be required to pay off those bonds, but the increase on real property in the county will be limited to five mills, the resolution states, and the bond issue must be paid off within 30 years.
