M. Saginaw Grant, “Wapime” (grey fish), was born July 20, 1936, in Pawnee, Okla. He died Wednesday, July 28, 2021, in North Hollywood, Calif. He was 85 years old.
Grant served in the United States Marine Corps and was an actor with film and television credits such as “The Lone Ranger” and “Harts of the West.” He was an author, public speaker and spiritual leader. As hereditary chief of the Sac and Fox Nation, he was active in the Native American community.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Sarah Murray Grant and Austin Grant Sr.; son Robert Benjamin Kent and his sister Stella Wilson.
Survivors include his brothers Francis Grant Sr. and Austin Grant Jr. and his wife Vera, all of Cushing, Okla.; his daughter Lisa Grant and her wife Ann of Duncan, Okla.; his daughter-in-law Dodie Kent of Van Nuys, Calif.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; adopted daughter Mariana Tosca of Los Angeles, Calif.; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service is being arranged in Los Angeles through Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. Traditional tribal services will be 7 p.m., Friday, August 13, 2021, at the Sac and Fox Nation Community Center in Stroud. Burial will be Saturday morning at the Sac and Fox Tribal Cemetery in Stroud under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Stroud.
