Big weekend for North Rock Creek

There were a couple of huge firsts last week for North Rock Creek.

On Thursday, the Cougars won their first-ever high school football game, taking a 28-8 victory at Choctaw.

Then on Friday, the Lady Cougars volleyball team made history by becoming the first North Rock Creek team to appear in OSSAA state tournament.

Although they lost, 0-3, the Lady Cougars played well and energized the school, which took five buses of students and fans to the game.

North Rock Creek is in its third year of having a high school and played mostly sophomores and freshmen. Chloe Carter was the lone junior

“It’s been an exciting ride,” said coach Jamie Hancock. “Obviously, it’s not the outcome we wanted, but it’s like I told our girls. We made it here and that’s something to be proud of.

“Everyone else has been here several times, so it’s nothing to walk away with their heads down about.

“I think the feeling they had after the game will have a great impact on their motivation for next year. Hopefully, they hang on to that feeling and let it continue to motivate them through next year.”

Coach Jason Murray said he was happy for the players to taste success after struggling early in the season.

“They’ve worked really hard,” he said. “You tell them ‘you have to keep working and working’ and sometimes it doesn’t work out. That’s just life.

“I’m happy it worked out for them tonight.

“After the first quarter, we settled down and played a lot cleaner football game. Defense played outstanding other than just a couple of plays.”
