Wellston put up a season-high 92 points en route to a mercy rule win over visiting Life Prep Academy Thursday night.

The win was the fourth in five games for the Tigers, who are now 4-4 for the season and face Cornerstone Academy at home on Friday.

The turn-around has been a dramatic one for the Tigers, who lost three mercy-rule games to start the season.

“We really came together as a team and our young quarterback, Kage Danker, really grew up,” said coach James Jones. “I think what happened was that he took those first three games and let them refine him.

“Instead of him folding and saying ‘I’m a sophomore and I can’t do this,’ he stepped up and took hold of this team and he just propelled us forward.”

Wellston racked up 52 points in a first quarter that eliminated most of the drama.

Joey Brown started the scoring with runs of five and 20 yards. Danker followed with a 24-yarder and then hit McKoy Coulson with a 60-yard scoring pass to make it 30-18

Wellston racked up 642 total yards on 49 snaps, and ran for 421 yards.

Danker had 167 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, Coulson had 86 yards and a score, Brown had 66 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Coulson also caught two balls for 73 yards and a score and Brown had three catches for 72 and a score.

“I’m real proud of our boys and I’m proud of them to come out here and not take their foot off the gas,” Jones said.
