I’ve always looked forward to this time of year. The month of August is normally hot and it’s been plenty hot lately, topping the century mark regularly as September nears. Some areas across the state have seen muchneeded rain. Others not so much.

Hearing set in Stroud man’s death

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a Jennings man facing a manslaughter charge or in the alternative negligent homicide after his semi-trailer truck collided with a vehicle driven by a Stroud man who died in the crash.

Investigation continues in shooting of teens

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into a shooting that injured two teens, still seeking to identify two suspects. The two teenagers were reportedly injured in a shooting north of Chandler just before midnight on Aug. 11.

Suspect to stand trial in teen shooting

A Chandler man has been bound over to stand trial on amended charges in a shooting on Easter Sunday night that injured a teenage girl.

Earl Blakley-Ft. Worth, TX. Jan. 6, 1935-July 31, 2023 Earl Ray Blakley passed into the arms of Jesus on Monday, July 31st, 2023. He was born in Kendrick Oklahoma to H.C. Blakley and Lola Sutton. Earl Ray graduated from Kendrick High School in 1952. He attended Oklahoma A&M, graduating in 1956.

Vertrice Mae Smith

Vertrice Mae Smith was born March 8, 1929 to Royal and Edith (Cremean) Waller in Lima, Ohio. She passed away August 12, 2023 in Wellston, Oklahoma at the age of 94. Vertrice grew up in Ohio. She married Dillard Smith in New Mexico in 1946. They moved to Oklahoma and raised seven children together.

Leota S. Ward

Meeker resident Leota S. Ward, age 96, departed this life on August 13, 2023 in Shawnee. Leota was born near Little Axe, Oklahoma in rural Cleveland County on October 27th, 1926, to Warner E. and Murial A. (Martin) Wilkerson.
