The Oklahoma Poison Center released safety tips for students heading back to school. In a press release sent out on Aug. 22, the center reminded parents, teachers, and caregivers that many everyday school items can have poison risks if they aren’t handled or stored properly.
“Back-to-school is an exciting time, but it’s also when we see an increase in certain types of exposures – everything from children swallowing hand sanitizer to medication mix-ups in the nurse’s office,” said Kristie Edelen, Pharm.D., DABAT, managing director of the Oklahoma Poison Center. “A few simple precautions – like properly storing supplies and knowing the Poison Help number – can make all the difference in keeping kids safe and healthy all school year long.”
Some of the tips include proper labeling and adult oversight with teens and children who carry prescriptions such as inhalers, EpiPens and ADHD meds, and to choose non-toxic art supplies when it comes to paints, glues and markers. The Center said hand sanitizer contains high alcohol and can be dangerous if swallowed.
Other tips include:
● Disinfectant sprays and wipes should be stored securely out of children’s reach.
● Safe storage and teacher supervision are critical with science lab chemicals.
