Town Talk

It’s grand opening time for Putt Putt Kicks on Route 66. Come celebrate with us on Saturday, July 30th, from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

There will be free hotdogs for everyone and $2.00 golf for all ages except three and under is free. We are planning for a big crowd so come out and support all the effort that has been put into this project by local volunteers and donations from both near and far.

If you haven’t visited the course, you’re missing out. Every time I walk from hole to hole, I’m amazed at how great each detail is and appreciate the love for our community that was put into every aspect of this golf course. Bring a lawn chair and come check out Town Talk’s latest project and hang out with your neighbors on Route 66.

A big thank you to David and Janet Griebel for donating two picnic tables, umbrellas and umbrella stands.

They will arrive in time for the grand opening, but you may want to bring lawn chairs, too. David and I graduated from Stroud High School together in 1974 and our class has adopted Janet as well.

They are great supporters of Stroud and Town Talk.

Speaking of my classmates, another 1974 graduate is Phil Mauldin who with his wife and two daughters recently visited Phil’s mother, Thelma Mauldin, who still lives in Stroud.

Phil’s oldest daughter, Amanda, currently resides in New York and she brought a friend with her to Oklahoma to show him some of the attractions in our Great State. He was impressed with our Sac & Fox Pow Wow.

They also visited several OKC museums and the 9/11 Memorial. He enjoyed his time here and stated there were more interesting places than he had expected to see. I’m glad we pleasantly surprised him.

A big thank you to Nellie Faye Cooper, Lavina Hinman and Pat Poskey for planting the flowers at the Foster Park entrance. Lavina and Nellie Faye filled the planter around the sign and Pat took care of the pot that sits under the tree.

Town Talk has been blessed with many volunteers who want to help in our mission to make Stroud a great place to live. Former Stroud resident and Stroud High School graduate Paul Mercer and his wife Lou Anne have contacted me asking how they can help us, too.

They reside in Oklahoma City but come back to Stroud often to visit friends and have lunch at D’s. They should never have asked because we are going to put them to work.

Did you know we have two VRBO’s (vacation rental by owner) in town? I knew Kim and Marilyn Wheeler owned one on 4th Avenue right off Main called The Locker, but I recently learned that Joe Bill Shelhope and Sharon Medearis also have one on their property north of Stroud. This past weekend with all the activities at the Sac & Fox Nation our hotels had no vacancies.

My sister-in-law, Lisa Smalley, was looking for a place for her sister and nephew to stay who were visiting from Arizona and Marilyn directed her to the Shelhope’s. It’s nice to know we have these options available when the hotels are full or for those wanting a more unique experience.

Vacation Bible School has been in full swing this week at First Baptist Church. There are over 100 pre-K through fifth graders at the church each night fellowshipping and learning together. What a great activity for our kiddos. Deer Creek Baptist also has VBS going on this week.

First United Methodist and First Christian churches will jointly hold Bible School next week and First Assembly will be hosting a kids’ crusade in August.

With all the pressures and misinformation our kids get today, we are fortunate to have active churches in our community.

Stroud’s City Council will meet this Thursday night, July 14th at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall.

The Oklahoma Blood Institute will have a blood drive this Saturday, July 16th, from 11:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Our local businesses are open for business. The Treasure Box is hosting an event once a month on Saturdays at the Pavilion. Unique OK is now Unique Market. They have added outside tables and chairs with umbrellas for you to sit and enjoy some of their delicious ice cream. Five Star BBQ has a new sign and a new logo and have also renovated the inside if you haven’t seen it yet.

There’s always something new going on at Ruby’s and Vi’s still making her delicious pies and serving them at D’s.

True Value not only has your nuts and bolts but also sells ice cream and a variety of cold soda pop.

This is just a few of our merchants that are waiting to serve you. Check them out and thank you for choosing to shop local………………first!
