Mom and I have recovered from our bout with COVID.
We are out of quarantine and back to our normal routine. We do grieve for all our friends who have lost loved ones to this virus.
Stroud has suffered so much loss recently, not only due to COVID but other illnesses and accidents.
This past week my dear friend, Olen Hurst, died. Olen was in rehab and scheduled to move to Prairie Point after he finished his rehabilitation.
Sadly, he did not get to make the move. Olen was one of our veterans and supported not only all the American Legion/ Auxiliary projects but Town Talk’s projects as well.
I didn’t know Olen very well until I took over the presidency of the American Legion Auxiliary a few years ago. We became fast friends, and he was willing and eager to help.
He led an interesting life and leaves a wonderful legacy. I hope to share his story with you someday.
Many of you may remember Jay and Patti Mayfield Lankford. They are both graduates of Stroud High School. Patti, too, died this past week. Jay is the son of the late J.D. and Cecil Lankford. His dad died in 1975, but his mom was a local resident until the time of her death. She worked as a manager at Howard Johnson’s for years but ended her working career at what was formerly Jack’s on Main Street. Patti was the daughter of the late Billy and Sue Mayfield and the niece of Sammy and Marie Mayfield of Edmond. Patti is my distant cousin. She and Jay had moved from Stroud to the Coweta area several years ago. Our condolences go out to the Lankford/Mayfield families.
A great big thank you to Julie Bivin and David Evans for helping put together golf holes on Tuesday of this week. We worked about four hot hours, but we have the shell of the holes completed. We plan on moving them to Main Street next week. Once we move them, they will still need plenty of finishing touches. We will be scheduling a work night so that more of you can help with this project.
My great-nephew Lincoln celebrated his 5th birthday this past Saturday. He spent it at the ballpark watching his big brother, Gideon, play baseball. Gideon will celebrate his 11th birthday this Saturday.
I’m sure our local merchants and restauranteurs are gearing up for a busy shopping weekend. Be sure and check out any Labor Day sales they might have in their stores. Have a great week and thank you for choosing to shop and dine local………………first!
