Davenport did a full game’s work in two periods Friday night and overwhelmed Maud, 50-0.
The game ended at halftime under the 45-point mercy rule, but the Bulldogs still amassed 414 yards of total offense while limiting Maud to 42.
The win lifted them to a 2-0 record going into Friday night’s game at Savanna. They’ve out-scored their two opponents by a combined score of 104-0.
“Our offense is doing a good job blocking for each other, “ said coach Grant Powell. “Chace Mitchell is doing a great job sharing the ball and not singling one guy out.
“I think that’s making us more dominant in the past since we have so many weapons around him.”
Mitchell, a junior quarterback, completed nine of 11 passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns and ran for an additional 66 yards on three carries.
Newcomer Chace Buchanan scored two touchdowns and impressed his coach with his blocking.
“When he’s not getting the ball, he’s downfield blocking,” Powell said. “One play in particular, Chase Mitchell’s running down the sideline. He scored a 60-yard touchdown and there’s a guy that he has to beat.
“Buchanan just lays his body out in front of him, knocked the guy out of the way and Chace Mitchell scores the touchdown. That’s hard to coach and teach.”
Buchanan finished with three catches for 108 yards and carried the ball once for six yards.
The Dawgs were just as dominant when Maud had the ball, allowing only the Tigers only 1.75 yards per snap.
“I thought our defense continued to play really fast and swarmed to the ball,: “ Powell said. “There aren’t a lot of guys getting solo tackles. We have four or five hats swarming to the ball and making it hard for the offense. I’m very pleased with the defense.
“We’re pretty deep this year and we’re fortunate that if someone needs a break, we can rotate someone else in there.
This week, Davenport goes east for a 7 p.m. game at Savanna, where they may encounter a different kind of opponent. The host Bulldogs are 1-0 after beating Wilson-Henryetta 50-0 in Week Zero.
“They’re very big up front,” Powell said. “They have four guys that are 250plus. I think they have six transfers from McAlester, so they have some big, big boys who have at the 5A level.
Powell said the Dawgs will have to contain Aiden Totani, Savanna’s senior quarterback “He’s a difference maker., Powell said. “He’ll carry the ball 40 or 50 times a game. They’ll spread it out and snap it to him, so we have to keep an eye on him and keep him in check. If we can do that, they’ll have trouble with our speed.”
Following the Savanna game, Davenport comes back home to face Weleetka.
