The Davenport Bulldogs have opened the season with a 2-0 record after thumping Wetumka 50-8 in their home opener at Bulldog Stadium.
Even though the final score was lopsided, Davenport Coach John Greenfield said, “They came out and they thought they were going to win. They played hard,” he said of the Chieftains.
The veteran coach said the Bulldogs received the opening kickoff and on the second or third offensive play of the game, his sophomore quarterback Chance Acord dropped the ball.
“But our right guard Houston Byford scooped it up and ran about 60 yards for the touchdown,” he said.
“We scored in a hurry,” he noted.
Accord ran 13 yards on seven carries, but he was 6-13 passing and had a pair of passing TD’s.
The Bulldogs go on the road this Friday night for a matchup with Alex which is 1-2. The kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Greenfield said, “We jumped out to a 22-0 lead and they finally scored. But they turned it over a few times and had several penalties that killed drives. The penalties set them back.”
He said the Chieftains would move the ball a little, “and then they’d turn it over. We did a pretty good job, but early on it was pretty rough. They stuffed us on our first play of the game,” he said.
The coach pointed out, “The stunt caught up with them. We got some large chunks of yards and moved the ball pretty well on them.”
He said his defense played well. “They got the one big play on us. They have some fairly good talent on their team, but they’re pretty young.
“We tried to keep our offense balanced. Our power plays gave them the most trouble,” he thinks.
The Chieftains came out trying to run on the Bulldogs. “They tried spreading it out on us and probably had the best luck with that. They had a really hard time moving the ball on us though. They went back to their pro-style offense and tried to run out it most of the time,” he said.
He said his offensive and defensive fronts were somewhat dominant.
