Town Talk

Thank you to everyone who came out to Town Talk’s Putt Putt Kicks on Route 66 Grand Opening.

All who attended said they enjoyed the evening. It reminded me of days gone by when we used to sit at the picnic table at the Merry Lee Drive-In, which was owned by former Stroud residents, Merry Lee and the late Lester Willis, and visit with friends.

Saturday night, community members sat around and chatted while adults and kids alike played mini golf. There was even some corn-hole competition going on. Our first visitors were a couple from Meeker, Chad and Karrie Curl.

They recently moved here from Japan to work at Tinker Air Force Base but Karrie was originally from California and her husband from upstate New York. Another new family who joined in the fun was Tom and Laura Hentges and their two sons.

They moved to the Kendrick area from Oregon. A big Town Talk thank you to Tim and Kathy Moore for taking the time to come check out the course. Tim is our local optometrist and serves on our Industrial Authority. Kathy is a retired Stroud High School teacher and currently serves on our local school board.

Town Talk appreciates it when City officials take the time to support our projects. Mayor Tommy Smith was out of town but would have attended otherwise. It’s important to our group of volunteers that we have local support as we work together to make Stroud the best community it can be.

Our strip mall west of town is really taking shape. Family Dollar/Dollar Tree has opened and there is a sign stating a computer/phone repair store is opening soon.

Along with Williams anchoring the west end and the other businesses on the east end, it looks like a full house. I remember years ago when my dad’s cousin Marvin came to visit from California.

Dad told him he wanted to take him to see our Mall. I think his cousin was impressed that we had one, and this was long before Tanger Outlet Mall.

Dad drove him out to see it and Marvin couldn’t believe he called it a Mall. Of course, Ed Smalley, being the jokester that he was, knew what the reaction would be. We did have a Mall but not the size his California cousin had anticipated. They both had a big chuckle.

It’s hard to believe our kiddos report to school next Thursday. Start slowing down in those school zones so you’re prepared when school is in session.

If you see any of our Stroud teachers scurrying around town taking care of last-minute preparations, take the time to thank them for the great job they do teaching our young people.

I forgot to mention last week that in addition to our bank robber cut-outs there are two horse riders on the south end of 4th Avenue. When you’re downtown be sure and check them out.

I love driving down Main Street because it’s always bustling. I still hear people complain that Stroud doesn’t have much to offer in the way of shopping, but I must disagree.

I think we have just about anything you might need or at least something that would get you by in an emergency. Our store fronts are full, and most merchants offer a wide range of products, attempting to meet our local needs.

If you’re not shopping locally, first, you’re missing out. Have a great week!
