By Mike McCormick Staff Writer The Davenport Bulldogs captured their first win of the season last Friday night, defeating Alex 46-38 on the road.
The Bulldogs improved to 1-5 on the season and have an open week this Friday. They open district play the following Thursday night, Oct.12, in a home contest, hosting Summit. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
Davenport head coach John Greenfield said this week, “We scored real quickly on them and took a 26-6 lead at the half. Then we almost let them catch up with us. We couldn’t stop them in the third quarter,” he noted.
“I think they got as close as 34-32, but we held on down the stretch to win. We played tough,” Greenfield added.
The Bulldogs escaped any new injuries. “Chace Buchanan and Aidan Stancell are still out. Chace goes back to the doctor this week and Aidan will have his knee looked at next Monday by an orthopedic,” the coach said.
He said with Friday night off this week, the team would watch film, lift weights and go through conditioning exercises Monday before starting to prepare for Summit on Tuesday, even with the Summit contest not until next Thursday.
“We have a shot at winning against Summit,” he believes.
