Tournament week

North Rock Creek’s boys, the Dale boys and McLoudgirls brought home championship from tournaments last week.

NRC beat Chandler in the finals of the Okemah tournament, Dale won the Boomarang Classic on its home court and McLoud won the First United Bank Classic at Bethel.

The NRC and Dale girls brought home runnerup hardware.

North Rock Creek’s boys, 6-0 after the tournament and ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, led by five at the half against Chandler, but then Caleb Hawkins happened.

A senior who is headed to North Texas on a football scholarship, threw in 12 points in the third quarter and four in the fourth as the Cougars pulled away.

He finished with 20 points and was named the MVP of the tournament.

The loss was the first of the season for the Lions, now 3-1 for the season and ranked No. 14 in Class 3A.

McLoud’s girls beat Blanchard, 33-24, in the championship game at Bethel. The Lady Redskins pushed their record to 4-1 and are ranked No. 16 in Class 4A.

The No.1-ranked Dale boys had no trouble in their bracket, winning all three games by more than 20 points and dispatching Above, Chandler’s Jake Smithey (25) slams a dunk in the Lions’ game against North Rock Creek Saturday night. The Lady Pirates fell behind early in their finals, a matchup of No. 1 ranked teams, before falling to Washington, 67-71.

The loss was the first of the season for the DLPs, now 7-1.

The North Rock Creek girls matched up with Class 2A power Okemah in their finals.

Okemah pulled out to a commanding lead in the secondhalf,butNRCclosed the gap to nine at one point before falling, 40-57.

NRC was 5-1 after the loss and ranked No. 11 in Class4A.Okemahisranked No. 5 in Class 2A and remained unbeaten.
