Davenport runs past Wetumka

Davenport celebrated its home football opener of the 2025 season in a big way with a 52-30 victory over Wetumka.

Head coach Grant Powell said, “We played a really good game. We avenged a loss from last year to them.

“Our quarterback Chase Mitchell found open receivers down field. Reece Murfin caught three touchdown passes. Brody Robinson broke a couple of long runs for TD’s too,” he noted.

Powell said the Bulldogs scored on their opening drive and then built a 22-0 lead with under two minutes to go before halftime. “We scored again and took a 30-0 advantage into intermission.

We just stymied them that first half,” an elated Powell added.

The Bulldogs’ sophomore quarterback Chase Mitchell threw for 277 yards and five touchdowns and completed 13 of his 22 passes. He had 287 yards total offense.

Brody Robinson ran the ball for 95 yards on 13 carries including two rushing touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass.

On defense, Robinson had seven solo tackles, along with a dozen assisted for a total of 19.

Reece Murfin had six catches for 142 yards including the three TD’s. Murfin also had a total of 12 tackles on defense.

Ivan Morris snagged a 68-yard TD pass.

Ayden Stancell carried the ball eight times for 20 yards and on defense he had a total of 13 tackles and two pass deflections.

“Our defense played well,” the coach said. “We got a couple of turnovers.”

Up next for the Bulldogs is a road contest to Alex Friday night. Powell said the kickoff is at 7 p.m.

He said like Wetumka was, “They’re big up front. We’re going to try and get around them.”

He mentioned Alex is 1-2 on the season with losses to Okeene and Destiny Christian and a win over Maud.

“They like to run the football, so it’s going to be a big test for us,” Powell said., “Chase is throwing the ball well, so we’re going keep the ball in his hands,” he added.
