Town Talk

Acord Signs & On the Wall Graphics owner Debbie Acord contacted me over the weekend and said our new digital sign for Main Street should ship on May 6th. It won’t be long now.

I think this will be a great addition to Stroud. After we are no longer quarantined, I’m sure everyone will be ready for some summertime activities.

This will be a great way to get the information out to our community.

People contact me quite often asking about unoccupied business properties to rent or buy in Stroud, especially on Main Street. There just aren’t many available.

If you have a piece of property that you would like to sell/rent, please let me know and I’ll be happy to get the word out for you.

I was walking the track field the other day and as I came around the last curve I was looking up at the house where I spent many a “fifth quarter” after home football games. It was the home of Francis Watt and her son, Wesley.

Francis would open her home after the games for wholesome food and fun for any high school student who wanted to attend.

Her dear friend, Hazel Standridge, was always on hand to help. Those were fun times and we were fortunate to have had those two ladies investing in our lives.

I recently reconnected with Wes on Facebook and he currently lives in Houston. I found out through Wes’s Memorial Day post a few years ago that his dad was a veteran of the Korean War.

I always knew Francis as a single mom but didn’t know about Wes’s father. Wesley stated that his dad died from a rare bone marrow disease about six months before he was born.

Francis was the first person I knew to own the Stroud American and it is still going strong all these years later.

If you need an outdoor picnic table for the adults or the children in your family, you can purchase one at Unique OK right here in Stroud.

These beautiful tables are individually made by John Rill. John is Carlton Rill’s brother. During my Dad’s days at the Okie Steak House, Frank Mathis owned the laundromat right next door. John and Carlton are Frank’s grandsons and they both do amazing woodwork.

Unique OK has added many new gift items inside the store, too, along with custom made onesies for those of you needing a baby gift. Stop by and check them out.

Thanks to all our small businesses who have weathered the pandemic and gone above and beyond to make sure our needs could be meet locally.

It looks like the end is in sight and businesses that have been closed will slowly start to reopen. Let’s continue to support them as they get back on their feet after this shutdown.

Have a great week and remember to shop and dine local………first.
