When reflecting on her eighth-grade school year, Mattie Hurley, a freshman FFA member at Meeker High School, is reminded of how much growth has taken place and how many obstacles she has overcome. Living with highfunctioning autism and other medical needs meant being homeschooled until eighth grade. After expressing her readiness to try something new, Hurley decided to give public school a chance.
Hurley states, “Highfunctioning autism presents challenges such as difficulty with social interactions, staying focused, handling sudden changes, and understanding social cues.”
At the beginning of the school year, making new friends was difficult, and group activities were often avoided out of fear of saying or doing the wrong thing. However, joining FFA became a turning point.
Over the last couple of years, Hurley says, “FFA has made it easier for me to make friends and helped me find confidence in myself.”
This past year, Mattie participated in the Entomology Career Development Event and discovered both a talent for identifying insects and a genuine enjoyment for the activity.
FFA has shown her that having autism does not prevent someone from being a leader or a good friend; in fact, it has opened many doors for Mattie.
“My favorite thing about FFA is the long drives to contests and conventions— singing along with fellow members and ag teachers along the way.” Although she has only been involved in FFA for just over a year, the organization has provided her with a strong sense of care and belonging within her community, making her feel accepted.
With renewed confidence, Mattie looks forward to what can be accomplished over the next four years. After high school, Hurley plans to continue her dance career and eventually teach at her dance studio. She also plans to attend Oklahoma State University, majoring in cosmetology while continuing to study entomology.
Mattie Hurley is proof that FFA can make a lasting impact on the lives of youth and those around them. She has flourished both academically and socially due to the influence of agricultural education. Those around her see her light shine and are inspired by the growth she has shown over the last several years. Without a doubt, Mattie will continue to make a positive impact on others and inspire those around her for years to come
