Bethany Descher and Nicholas Linn have been selected as Rotarians of the Month for December by the Chandler Rotary Club.
Bethany Descher is the daughter of Kryste Nguyen, Nick Dargel, Tony Nguyen, and Matthew Descher. She has a GPA of 3.75 and an ACT score of 25. She has also taken Advanced English classes since her freshman year of high school.
Descher has participated in numerous honor bands, including the OSSBDA All-State Honor Band, the Cimarron Valley Honor Band, and the ECOBDA Honor Band. She has advanced to the second round of All-State Band three years in a row. She has performed many solos and has earned two Superior ratings (1) at State.
She has also competed with a clarinet quartet at State and earned an Outstanding rating (2). As a member of the marching band’s color guard, Descher took on the role of Georgia Graves this past season. The band advanced to finals at every competition they performed at, and even secured sixth place at OBA.
Bethany is the president of Thespian Troupe #1825. She has also served as secretary and social media manager. She was elected a state thespian officer her sophomore year and has served for three years. Descher is the first person in Chandler history to have been elected to the state level.
She has participated in every show since the melodrama her freshman year. Some notable performances are “Little Shop of Horrors”, “The Old Man and The Old Moon”, and “The Green Archer”. Descher has been cast in every competition one-act since her sophomore year. This year, she won numerous awards, including OSSAA All-Star Cast, Thespian Festival All-State Cast and OSSAA All-State Cast. This year’s competition one-act was chosen to represent all of Oklahoma at the International Thespian Festival. This past summer, Descher and another student competed at the International Thespian Festival, where they received a 19/20, therefore receiving a Superior rating (1). They are the first students in Chandler history to compete at Nationals.
Other activities that Descher is active in are Music Makers, the academic team, Positive Peers, PSI, Lions Club, Rotary Club and BancFirst Student Board of Directors. She is also a kindergarten teacher’s aide and class secretary. She works at the local Walmart as a cashier.
Descher has been very involved with the community. She has served with the Lincoln County Children’s Theatre Camp for the past two summers. She has also been an East Side Summer School Helper for the past two summers. For the past two winters, she has helped paint windows for businesses on Main Street. She also serves with Positive Peers at Wise Guys Girl Power every year. For the last four years, Descher has been a server, seater and greeter with LCOS. She has been picked to attend Girls State and will be returning this summer as a junior counselor.
After graduation, Descher plans to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue a music education degree. She is also considering joining the Navy or National Guard. In the future, Bethany hopes to be a music teacher.
Nicholas R. Linn is the son of Larry and Donna Linn of Chandler. He is a senior at Chandler High School and will graduate as valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA and an ACT score of 25. Ranked first in his class, Linn has excelled in advanced coursework, including four years of AP English and concurrent college classes.
He has earned numerous academic awards across subjects ranging from science to history, and has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. Nicholas is also involved in multiple school organizations, such as Positive Peers, PSI and Gifted and Talented.
Linn has demonstrated strong leadership as Student Council Vice President and as a leader in Fish Club. He is also deeply involved in community service, including volunteering at the local food pantry and serving veterans on Veterans Day.
After graduation, Linn plans to attend aviation school to earn his pilot certifications and pursue a career as a commercial pilot.
