Charges pile up against Seminole man

A Seminole man, already wanted on a $20,000 bench for nine charges filed against him in early March, faces five additional counts and is sought on another warrant for his arrest.

Gustus Lane Hinton, 24, was originally charged March 2 in Lincoln County with four felonies and five misdemeanors.

He is facing an additional felony count and four more misdemeanors that were filed against him in Lincoln County District Court on April 14.

In connection with those charges, a $15,000 bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

The newest felony charge filed is for Battery/Assault and Battery on a Police Officer. He is accused of slamming Tryon Police Officer Billy Wilson’s hand into a car door jamb on Jan. 4 this year in Lincoln County.

Counts 2 through 5 are misdemeanors. Count 2 is for eluding/attempting to elude police officer by driving away to evade arrest after committing assault and battery on a police officer.

Count 3, reckless driving, accuses Hinton of driving 77 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone on SH 105 in Tryon on the same date.

In Count 4, Hinton is accused of driving with a suspended license by driving a Ford pickup on a public road while his driving privileges were suspended.

Count 5 charges him with possession of a controlled dangerous substance by possessing methamphetamine, a CDS.

The previous nine charges filed against Hinton in March include:

Felonious eluding/attempting to elude police officer count accusing Hinton of after having been signaled to stop, accelerating, causing another vehicle to swerve and drive off the road near SH 18.

Three felonies are for malicious injury to property.

The first malicious injury to property charge states Hinton drove through and destroyed three sections of fence and t-posts belonging to Terri Miller valued at over $1,500 near SH 18.

Another malicious injury to property charge accuses him of driving through and destroying two sections of fence and t-posts owned by Paul Beloncik valued at over $1,500 near SH 18.

And the third malicious injury to property charge states Hinton drove through five sections of fence and t-posts belonging to Michael Bay valued at over $2,500 near SH 18.

The original misdemeanors Hinton faces are reckless driving, improper passing in a no passing zone, and three counts of failure to obey a traffic control device.

The reckless driving count alleges Hinton drove at high speed, failing to stop at stop signs and causing another vehicle to swerve near SH 18.

Hinton is also accused of improper passing by passing another vehicle in a no pass zone while traveling southbound on SH 18.

The three failure to obey traffic control device counts accuse Hinton of failing to stop at posted stop signs while turning east onto 820 Road from 3460 Road, while turning south onto 3470 Road from 820 Road and while crossing the intersection of 830 Road and 3470 Road.

All of the alleged offenses reportedly occurred on Jan. 4 of this year in Lincoln County.

All of the charges stem from a high speed pursuit that began when Tryon Police Chief Billy Wilson reportedly was chasing a vehicle driven by a suspect later identified as Hinton.

Several Lincoln County deputies, including Sgt. Tanner Hand, Capt, Chuck Brewer, Undersheriff Tim Donaldson, were involved in the pursuit at one time or another.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol set up a perimeter at one point along with several law enforcement agencies assisting while OHP aircraft and ground personnel checked the area around the vehicle.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in the original case, there are several outstanding warrants for Hinton’s arrest from other jurisdictions.
