Residents of Chandler will have more commercial options in the not-so-far future.
Two new developments are on the books. The Chandler City Council recently approved the final plat for a development across from Walmart at their meeting on May 14. The other will be a strip mall where the Econolodge used to sit.
Currently owned by Shoofly Development LLC, the spot across from Walmart has 17 tracts ranging in size from a little over one acre to almost nine acres. The plat was officially filed on May 22, according to City Manager Jason Orr.
Shoofly plans to sell the tracts to individual developers, Orr said, so there are currently no set plans for what businesses will be there. One tract is currently under contract.
Orr said the city has been discussing future traffic signals at the location with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT).
“It’s not warranted at this time, but we believe as this develops that we will need a traffic signal there,” he said. “With ODOT, they like the actual traffic count numbers to be there if they want it, instead of spending the money before the traffic is there.”
Orr added that the layout’s design is beneficial because it will connect the future residential areas behind it.
T.J. Remy, the developer for the Comfort Inn and Suites going in behind Randy Bowen, is set to build a strip mall where the Econolodge used to stand. The mall will include two restaurant end caps with seven commercial spaces in between at 1500 sq. ft. each.
Orr said Remy will turn in his plans for both properties in the next few weeks. Work on the hotel is set to start by August.
