Chandler’s Kalee Peery won the first-ever girls lightweight powerlifting state championship for junior high last weekend in Dickson.
Going into deadlift, Kalee, a freshman, was behind by 5 pounds and she could not tie. So, she needed to do 10 more pounds than the best deadlift of her competitors to win by five lbs.
She missed her second attempt of 230lbs on deadlift because of a technicality.
She needed 245 lbs on deadlift to win, so she decided to forget about the attempt she missed and go for the win. She pulled 245 lbs on her last deadlift attempt, which springboarded her to win the championship.
Shayla Peery lifted in the High School division at 121lb weight class. She finished 14th of 31 lifters. She squatted 190, benched 85 and deadlift 195 for a total of 470 lbs.
There were 358 lifters in attendance representing 49 schools from all over the state of Oklahoma. There were nine high school girls divisions and two junior high girls divisions for a total of 11 individual state champions awarded.
