Chandler board of education meeting

The Chandler Board of Education this week hired a Secondary teacher and coach and also accepted several resignations from those either retiring or moving.

School Supt. Melody Toma said that following an executive session, the board returned to open meeting and employed A.J. Woodall as a Social Studies teacher and coach. “He’s a Chandler boy and we’re glad to have him back,” Toma noted.

He will definitely coach football but will be involved in other sports as well, she said.

Toma explained that also following the executive session the board took no action regarding the employment of a superintendent.

Toma announced in March she is retiring after 37 years in education and 30 of that in the Chandler School District. She’s been superintendent four years, she said. She pointed out that 18 applications have been received

She pointed out that 18 applications have been received for the position and that the deadline was Friday, April 8.

Toma said resignations that have been submitted and were accepted Monday evening include Susan Morton, Secondary math teacher; Jayleen Robertson, reading specialist, Joy Griffin, Secondary English teacher, Rob Garver, Secondary Social Studies teacher, Lacy Long, school nurse; Sage Higdon, Title VI tutor.

She said the following students were recognized during the board meeting this week. Students selected for the State Superintendent’s Award for Fine Arts Excellence included Shayla Peery, 2021, and Grace Myers and Trever Spruill both for 2022.

The following students auditioned and were selected for the 2021-2022 High School OkMEA All-State Choir: Colton Burbach, Trever Spruill and Grace Myers.

The following students auditioned and were selected for the 2021-2022 Junior High OkCDA All-State Choir: Weston Miller, Eli Smithey, Ian Radcliffe, Elizabeth Myers and Madelyn Ledford.

The following students auditioned and were selected for the Eastern Oklahoma Choral Directors regional honor choir. This year for the first time, every student who auditioned was selected for the choir.

They include: Alexis Juel, Madelyn Ledford, Weston Miller, Ian Radcliffe, Eli Smithey. Elizabeth Myers, Skyler Araujo, Kate Roberts, Lilly Smith, Adrianna Rivera, Jillian Kennedy, Grace Myers, Trever Spruill, Colton Burbach, Lory Dugger, Shayla Peery and Destiney Stewart.

In other business, the board:

Approved a bid for property and liability insurance for the 2022-2023 school for coverage beginning April 12, 2022.

Approved a service contract for Jacie Fite for Physical Therapy services for the 2022-2023 school year.

Approved an agreement with Janice Gray for psychometric testing and consultation services for the 2022-2023 school year.

Approved a service contract for Peggy Baker for Occupational Therapy services for the 2022/2023 school year.

Approved the list of high school library books as surplus.

Approved the list of East Side library books as surplus.

Approved Mary Mitchell’s request to implement the “Shared Sick Leave” policy.

Approved an out of state trip for Archery to participate in the Western NASP National Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah and the Eastern NASP National Tournament in Louisville, Ky.

Approved an out of state trip for BPA (Business Professionals of America) to participate in the state leadership conference in Dallas, Texas.
