Meeker approves text message system

The Meeker Town Board during its most recent meeting approved a communication system that allows the town to communicate with citizens regarding a number things.

City Clerk / Treasurer Mary Conner said the Trustees voted 4-1 in approving the system with Trustee Lanny Thompson casting the opposing vote.

In favor, were Mayor Donna Weber, Vice Mayor Aaron Head and Trustees Mike Orman and Mike Melton.

The system will allow the town to communicate with the citizens about garbage pickup, utility payments, city news and events, via text message for any citizen who wants to sign up for it.

Town officials said cost of the system will be $2,200 per year with a set up fee of $1,100 for the first year totaling $3,300 to be split between the General Account and the Public Works Account, they explained.

Conner said Trustees also discussed a fiber optic internet proposal.

They discussed a Windstream Enterprise proposal vs. Vyve Broadband. Conner noted they tabled the item following discussion and will take it up at next month’s meeting.

She said town officials must first check to see if they can get out of a contract with Vyve. Trustees also discussed ways to increase revenue for the Town of Meeker but took no action. It will be placed on next month’s agenda, Conner said.

Trustees approved to pay up to $700 to repair the driver’s side door on a 2007 Chevrolet truck.

Meeting as the Public Works Authority, Trustees agreed to reimburse Cody Briggs $89.34 regarding a trash poly cart on the water bill for her, Conner stated.

The Trustees agreed to use up to $40,000 in American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds to purchase a newer vehicle for the PWA..

Conner said they also agreed to purchase a 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup truck for $5,000.

The Town Board’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Conner said the Town Board meetings are now beginning at 6 p.m. each month.
