Stroud Auxiliary meets

The American Legion Auxiliary held its November meeting this past Monday.

Members attending were Pam Hunt, Aleta Smalley, Julie Bivin, Linda Waller, Cindy Mason, Diana Reed, Keturah Brown, Thelma Mauldin, Pam Hunt and Jo Braden. Members signed a birthday card for long-time Auxiliary member Delores Hamlin who was unable to attend the meeting but was celebrating her 93rd birthday.

Delores is a faithful and valuable member of the organization and is charge of sending cards and correspondences to both Auxiliary and Legion members.

President Diana Reed called the meeting to order, and Chaplain Jo Braden opened with prayer. Members then pledged allegiance to the flag.

Business items discussed were the on-going raffle for a patriotic blanket and Americana folk art duck.

Veteran’s Day yard signs were another topic on the agenda. The Auxiliary had sold “Thank You Veterans” yard signs last year and this year as a fundraiser. Members also approved an ad that would be placed in this week’s veteran’s insert in the newspaper.

After all old and new business was discussed, the meeting was adjourned. After the meeting, the group reflected on the upcoming Veteran’s Day and shared personal stories about their own veterans. Keturah Brown recalled being a 12-year-old girl when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Keturah had three brothers and one of their friends who lived a few doors down was killed that day during the attack. The next day her three brothers enlisted. One brother was shot during the war, lost his eyesight in one eye from the injury and spent time in a German POW camp. These memories were still very fresh and emotional for Keturah over 70 years later. We ask you to say thank you to a veteran this Veteran’s Day.
