Wellston man faces charges

A Wellston man faces a felony and a misdemeanor following his arrest in March by Lincoln County deputies.

Lucas James Goss, 21, was formally charged on April 5 in Lincoln County District Court with assault, battery or assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The misdemeanor count is for malicious injury to property, under $1,000.

A pre-preliminary hearing for Goss has been set for 1:30 p.m. on May 6.

The felony count accuses Goss of shooting Billy Barnett twice, once in the chest and once in the back with a pellet gun on March 23 this year at 331908 Shadow Wood Drive, Wellston, in Lincoln County.

The misdemeanor charges Goss with malicious injury to property under $1,000 by breaking the window of an automobile owned by Barnett on the same date at the same location.

Lincoln County Sheriff Sergeant Larry Stover, in a probable cause affidavit, states he was dispatched to 331908 E. Shadow Wood Drive Wellston around 7:35 p.m. on March 23 concern ing a shooting.

The victim was a 52-yearold man and the suspect was the neighbor, Stover said.

When Stover arrived at the scene, and met with the shooting victim, Billy Barnett, he noticed he had a small hole in his chest and a small hole in his back, the sergeant states.

Barnett identified the person who shot him as Lucas Goss, Stover reported.

Stover states he went to Goss’s residence and when Goss came out, he had his hands up.

The sergeant placed Goss in handcuffs and he told Stover he did not do anything wrong.

Stover said he took Goss back to the scene and informed dispatch the scene was secure and that EMS could arrive to give Barnett medical attention. Deputy Larry Stover, Jr. arrived on the scene with EMS.

Lucas first denied shooting Barnett or shooting the window out of Barnett’s car. Later he acknowledged he shot Barnett with the pellet gun and broke the driver’s side back window out of the vehicle.

Stover took Goss to the Lincoln County Jail.
