Wellston Elementary School has received a grant from the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board for robotics kits that are being used to implement computer science through robotics.
Susan Way, Elementary Principal, said the OERB grant totals $2,875 for five robotics kits.
“We just recently received the grant,” she said.
“Those kits are coming from KISS Institute for practical robotics.
“We fund a Junior Botball Challenge and it’s through the same company. OERB works through the KISS Institute.”
“Last year, the 20222023 school year, we started a robotics program for our Gifted and Talented Students. We are expanding it this year to all the fifth graders so they may participate in the Junior Botball Challenge.”
She pointed out, “Two of my teachers applied through OERB and obtained five kits between them. We already have kits from last year. We can purchase five more kits with the grant and we are in the process of purchasing those kits,” she added.
Way said the lead teacher is Nicole Reeves in the Gifted and Talented Program and the other teacher is Jackie Wall who teaches fifth grade.
“We’ll be able to expand the program to all fifth graders with purchase of those additional kits,” Way said.
