Bryan and Cherry April Rotarians

Chandler High School seniors Selah Bryan and Abbigaile Cherry were chosen as student members of the Rotary Club for April.

Selah is the daughter of Shirley Bryan and is the youngest of four children in her family.

She has prepared for life after high school by working through the summers at National American Insurance Company, saving money and getting an understanding of being a part of the workforce.

Selah served three years as a leader in Postponing Sexual Involvement. She was an aide for a first grade teacher and participated in Be A Light and Positive Peers. She has volunteered in her church nursery for six years and helped to organize her church food pantry.

Selah says she learned the satisfaction of putting service above self during her junior year when her grandmother was injured in a fall. Selah stayed with her the week prior to surgery to repair a shattered kneecap helping her with her physical needs and keeping her company.

After her grandmother returned home from surgery and rehabilitation, Selah spent the majority of that summer visiting her and bringing her comforts from home. Selah says she was happy to help someone who does so much for others. Helping her grandmother to recover swiftly and as painlessly as possible was a great way to spend her summer.

Selah’s plans after graduation are to pursue a career in early childhood education at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond or Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla.

Abbigaile, the daughter of Misty Cryer and Hunter Cryer, has one six-year-old sibling.

In preparation for life after high school, she has attended the Business Education Technology class at Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee, Okla., and took concurrent college-level classes.

She has taken steps to improve her leadership capabilities by attending both the State and National Leadership Conferences for Business Professionals of America.

Abbigaile’s volunteer work includes Wise Guys/Girl Power, East Side Elementary School Super Kids Day, and after school activities at GCTC. She gave of her time to help prepare East Side Elementary for the school year and served as a peer mentor.

Abbigaile learned the importance of putting service before self when she volunteered to work with Wise Guys/Girl Power, a program that has teens encouraging younger students to make positive choices.

She and a fellow classmate volunteered to help children learn the skill of shooting a bow and arrow. It required the two to arrive early, set up targets and make sure all the equipment was in good condition.

After demonstrating what a good shot should look like, Abbigaile and her partner walked the students through the 11 steps of shooting a bow. She says she felt joy and satisfaction in sharing her love for archery and seeing the enthusiasm of the younger students as they learned the skill.

A member of the CHS Gifted and Talented Program, Abbigaile plans to attend Rose State College with a major in business and accounting.
