Planning commission to consider zoning

The Chandler Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing at 6 p.m. this evening (Thursday, June 30) to consider rezoning property for a sports center.

The meeting will be held at Chandler City Hall, 414 Manvel Ave. in Chandler.

Chandler City Manager Jason Orr said the proposed rezoning is for 13.64 acres located at Rozell and Park Streets next to Tilghman Park. Current zoning classification is R-1, single family, and the zoning sought is C-2, commercial, he noted, for a sports facility.

He explained the hearing will provide an opportunity for the public to express support or opposition to the proposed rezoning.

“This will allow the commission to determine if the public, the commission itself and the City Council are going to be supportive,” Orr pointed out.

“Whatever the commission decides during tonight’s meeting would be forwarded to the City Council. The Planning Commission just makes a recommendation to the Council,” he stressed.

“Typically, it would go to the Council at its next meeting, July 12, but that’s not necessarily the case,” Orr stated.

He said the property owner has looked at several different possibilities in the past and that he’s owned the property for 21 years.
