Stroud resident, my friend and a dear friend to my mom and many others throughout our area, Felix Rubio, sadly passed away this past week. Felix was loved by all who knew him. He was a faithful volunteer for Lincoln County On-Stage working the lights for all productions. During the pandemic he was working from home and spending his free time working on a major renovation for the theater. While involved in this make-over, he suffered a fall which eventually took his life. Felix will be missed by all who know him and by all the organizations where he so generously gave his time.
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported Town Talk’s first Farmer’s Market. It was a huge success. Mandy Clark, Town Talk Volunteer, put the event together and is planning the next one for June 20th. Mandy is new to our community but jumped in with both feet. Thanks, Mandy, for all your hard work and thanks to all the vendors who participated. I hear there are already some new ones signed up for next month.
The American Legion gained a new member this past week. Delmer Summers has tried to join the American Legion since 1967. Delmer, after being honorably discharged from the army in 1958, worked in California for a few years before returning to Stroud. There were certain service date requirements from the National American Legion that had to be met in order to join and Delmer did not serve during those time periods. Those guidelines have since been changed and now all veterans are eligible to join. I think it’s so significant that Delmer still wanted to be a member after all these years. He told me after high school he and five of his friends enlisted in the United States Navy. Those men were: Robert Harold Henshaw, J. B. Dunn, Ervin Bud Blakely, Johnny Ash and Kenneth Sanders. Thank you to you and your friends for your service, Delmer. The American Legion Auxiliary also recently gained a new member, Diana Carroll McGuire. We are thankful for both new members and their support of these patriotic organizations.
Town Talk just purchased 11 new chairs for the swimming pool. Marsha Thompson and Sheana Newnam needed some new pool loungers and City Manager Bob Pearman asked Town Talk if this were a project with which we could help. All members agreed and were glad to help make it happen. Just another positive contribution to our community by Town Talk with the support and generosity of our supporters locally and Stroud alums from all over.
For a $5 donation to Town Talk your name will be put in a drawing to win the beautiful flowerpot seen in the picture. If you make a $20 donation, your name will be placed in the drawing five times. All profits will go toward building public restrooms at the Route 66 Pavilion. The pot will be empty, but you will also receive a $10 gift certificate to Unique OK to help you start filling your pot.
We will be giving away two pots to the first two names drawn. The drawing will take place on June 19th at 5:30 p.m. You don’t need to be present to win but come join us. I think Unique OK is planning something special. You may get your ticket at Unique OK or by contacting me.
It was nice to see OJ’s open for business again. Makes me feel like things might be getting a little back to normal. The Main Street flowerpots are planted, and our local businesses are ready to meet your summer needs. Let’s help them get back on their feet after being closed due to the pandemic. Remember to always shop and dine local……………………… first.
