Impatient drivers

A topic I’ve addressed before, though’s it’s been a long while since I’ve talked about it, is how much impatient drivers upset me. I previously stated that those who irritate me the most are the motorists who ignore traffic laws while they are showing their ignorance and impatience.

Maybe it’s because I’m getting a little older, but drivers who tailgate while I’m going down the road, at least doing the speed limit, irk me to now end. I’m sure I drive a little slower than a lot of people, among them my wife, but I do the speed limit, occasionally a little over.

I was driving down a two-lane road the other day, with a 40-mile speed limit that was clearly marked as a no passing zone for a good distance. While I think the limit should be at least 45 for that road and should be increased to that, it’s not.

Here came a driver behind me who was not only going well over the limit but was passing me in a no passing zone.

As we approached the top of the hill, I sensed what was going to happen. If there were no oncoming vehicle headed towards me, the car behind was going to completely ignore the clearly marked no passing zone and go right on by me.

That’s exactly what happened. Most people take it upon themselves to go well over the limit heading down this heavily traveled roadway.

I’m not sure exactly what my comment was. I used no expletives. All I know is that car was probably going 60-70 miles an hour and did it in a no passing zone.

That infuriates me. It’s little wonder that there are so many traffic accidents on our streets and roads today.

I see little law enforcement presence along most stretches of this roadway. Part of it is in the city limits and part is in the county.

This occurs more and more it seems along this stretch of road because motorists choose not to adhere to the stripes and the speed limit. I think the speed limit could be raised on some roads, among them this one.

But until they are, motorists should abide by the law.

Another pet peeve of mine is seeing drivers float or simply ignore stop signs. When a stop sign is present, it means just that, STOP! Some stop signs probably aren’t needed, just like speed limits should be raised on some roads. But until they are removed, the law should be obeyed.

A yield sign is intended for a motorist to slow down and give way to traffic already on that road.

I’m surely not a perfect driver, but I do try and adhere to traffic laws. It just seems to me that drivers, more and more, are in such a hurry they have no intention of obeying traffic laws.

I’ve mentioned before Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers have told me for years the No. 1 cause of accidents they investigate is speeding. Drivers simply won’t slow down, they say.

I suspect law enforcement officers with other agencies would make similar comments.

Their statements are valid, I think. Because law enforcement officers can’t possibly be everywhere, many drivers believe they can get away with breaking traffic laws. That’s sad.

Because as we can see on almost any given day, breaking them often leads to tragic consequences.
