Congratulations to Coach Gary Higgins on being selected for induction into the Oklahoma Coaches Association’s 2024 Hall of Fame. Higgins is currently a coach in North Rock Creek. He is a graduate of Stroud High School Class of 1966. Gary is married to Sherry Johnson Higgins who is also a Stroud High School graduate. Just another example of the outstanding graduates our school system produces. Gary is loved here in Stroud.

Stroud happenings this week include City Council meeting 6:00 p.m. Thursday March 14th at City Hall, Stroud High School and Middle School baseball games 4:30 p.m. Thursday March 14th at the Baseball Complex, no school Friday March 15th and St. Patrick’s Day Sunday March 16th. Stroud schools will be observing spring break March 18th through the 22nd so next week will be a slow week of activities.

Tonight, Thursday March 14th, the Stroud High School baseball team will host LittleAxe with both junior varsity and varsity taking the field. The games will start at 4:30 p.m. Stroud Middle School teams will host Mounds with games also starting at 4:30. All games will be held at Stroud’s new baseball complex which is north of Main Street on Allied Road. If you haven’t made it out to a game, the complex is worth a visit. The second field just opened, and the baseball fields are first-rate. At last Thursday’s game, middle school baseballer Lane Day suffered what looked like a broken ankle sliding into second base. The medical report said no torn ligaments and no break, just a soft tissue sprain. Good news for Lane and his baseball team.

Several Stroud baseball players as well as others in our area play on traveling baseball teams. Gideon plays on the Sandlot 14U team out of the Tulsa area. Also on this team are Stroud resident Cal Shields, son of Nate and Amy Shields and Lawson Elliott from Cushing, grandson of 1973 Stroud graduate Mary Gail Ethridge Cain. Cal is not currently playing due to an injury to his hand.

The team played in Springdale, Arkansas this past Sunday. Gideon hit an over the fence home run which gave the Sandlots a five to one lead over their opponent. He also came in to pitch in relief with bases loaded and no outs. He gave up no runs and finished the game with two no hit innings to preserve the six to five win. It was an exciting game!
