Davenport falls to Covington, Coyle up next

Davenport turned the ball over four times in the first half and dropped a district contest 52-24 to Covington-Douglas.

It sets up a must win game for the Bulldogs Thursday night at home against Coyle. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m., Coach Grant Powell says, with senior festivities starting at 6:30 p.m. There are no senior football players but the festivities will honor senior cheerleaders and others, he said.

Powell said the Bulldogs are 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the district and Coyle is 6-3 for the season and 2-2 in district play.

As the head coach put it, “We win, we’re in the playoff and if we lose we’re not.”

Powell said of Coyle, “They’re physical, they play hard and they rotate three or four running backs.”

On the loss to Covington-Douglas, Powell summed it up by saying, “We didn’t come to play in the first half. But that game is behind us and we still have a chance.”

The coach said that running back Brody Robinson who also plays on defense didn’t play on offense in last Friday’s contest due to a shoulder injury. He had 10 solo tackles and made eight assists for a total of 18 along with a pass deflection.

Chase Mitchell returned to quarterback and was 16 of 27 passing for 129 yards. He rushed for 32 yards on four carries that included a touchdown. Mitchell also had 10 total tackles as did Tyler Gilkison.

Aydan Stancell rushed 18 times for 49 yards and a TD.
